The Laurel Senior Friendship Club met on July 10, 2013, at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center. Vice President Eileen Pastore opened the meeting at 10:30a.m. Chaplain Gloria Laura offered a prayer. We followed with the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Choir gave us The Star Spangled Banner, Good Old Summertime and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Eileen announced we will have a new sign-up sheet next month that will help us keep track of members who miss several meetings. This will enable us to keep in touch with members and make sure they are all right.
Eileen invited everyone to come to Bingo every Tuesday morning. She also announced that 105 individuals attended the meeting today. Our greeters, Shirley Denell and Mazie Coon, gave us small copies of the U.S. Constitution. Eileen introduced 2 new members; announced the coffee fund brought in $29 today; and thanked those who brought desserts. The 50/50 drawing resulted in $50 for the Treasury and $25 each to Marian Fine and Marcia Richards.
Our Fund Raising Chair, Jackie Sanders, announced that the raffles run by Esther Mills and Pat Harding brought in $49 and the Bakeless Bake Sale brought in over $100. She and Co-chair Carol Koppal will be featuring different raffles in the coming months.
Our Travel Chair, Joe Skladany, reported that the next trip is the Murder Mystery Train Ride and a new cruise is planned for February. Complete travel information is located elsewhere in this newsletter. Our Helping Hands Chair, Carol Kosydar, reported her committee sent 34 cards; made 27 calls; conducted 6 visits; attended 1 viewing and funeral; gave 2 gift baskets; loaned out 3 pieces of equipment; and received 2 thank you notes. She asked for donated items suitable for their gift baskets.
Eileen stated we need a Program Chair to arrange programs for our meetings. This usually involves obtaining a speaker six times a year. She also said we need a Publicity Chair to help publicize our Club activities in the media.
President Ron Mayhugh said the Club received a substantial donation from Ann Lee Jackson in appreciation for the 85+ birthday party which she attended in May.
We ended the meeting with a historical quiz on things we knew (or didn’t know) about our country and its history.
Gloria Laura gave the benediction and we adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
