The Laurel Senior Friendship Club met on March 12, 2014, at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center. President Ron Mayhugh opened the meeting at 10:30 a.m.; and Chaplain Eileen Pastore offered a prayer. We followed with the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Choir gave us My Country Tis of Thee, Dear Hearts & Gentle People, and When Irish Eyes are Smiling.
Betty Mannas, our Treasurer, reported on our finances. She has five tables signed up, so far, for our craft show on April 26. She announced we will be participating in the Main Street Festival with the Kalie’s float and possibly with a
convertible for our President. Our greeters today were Ann and Michael Mecanko. Attendance was 108 individuals.
Jackie Sanders reported the next fund raiser will be the Easter egg tree drawing next month. The tree will have a $100 Visa gift card and some hand-painted eggs. She thanked us for our support. Several items were raffled. The 50/50 raffle resulted in $67 for the Treasury and $33 each to Nan Tripp and Mary Jane Bodner.
Carol Kosydar’s Helping Hands Committee sent 40 cards; made 20 calls, and made 2 hospital/nursing home visits in February. Ron reported that he attended the funeral service of Richard D. Anderson.
Joe Skladany told us the just completed Caribbean cruise was a success. The next trips are to Harrington casino and Pittburgh, PA. The Travel Committee is working on a Baltimore Harbor cruise in September.
Ron thanked those who brought desserts; and Eileen Pastore gave the benediction so we could adjourn to enjoy an Irish trivia quiz. As they say in Ireland, “faith and begorra”, who knew Irish potatoes came from South America. Didn’t Jack Wittmann look tall for a leprechaun? The prize winners in this quiz were Anne Curtis, Denise Flannery, and Bernie Buczynski. Each of them won a free lunch ticket.
