The Laurel Senior Friendship Club met on November 9, 2016 at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center. Vice President Margaret Field opened the meeting at 10:30am.
Chaplain Pauline Pivowar offered a prayer. Our Choir gave us “The Marine Hymn”, “Getting to Know You”, and “We Gather Together”. Frances Notley of the DAR and
Marcia Richards paid tribute, presented mementos, and gave a Proclamation from President Obama to our Vietnam veterans. They thanked each one individually for their service. Members of Laurel High School ROTC presented the colors; and we responded with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Margaret welcomed new members and invited them to the New Member Orientation on November 17. She announced attendance of 130 individuals and thanked our greeters who were Phyllis Ross and Carol Klein.
Esther’s raffles brought in $107. The 50/50 raffle resulted in $65 for the Treasury and $32 each to Mary Hooper and Jean Flanick. Barbara Brent conducted the raffle which
gave a $25 gift card to four winners.
Vice President Dominic Giachino introduced Dr. Cindy Gueli who spoke about her book, “The Lipstick Brigade”. The book is about the young women who came to work in
Washington, D.C. to replace the men who went to war. These “government girls” fought the war with typewriters. Federal offices put out ads asking for girls to come work in D.C.
Julia Child, who worked for the OSS, is perhaps the best known of the some two hundred thousand girls who answered the call. Many worked in those “temporary buildings”
on the mall and many found much dating available with those thousands of servicemen who came to D.C. each month. Many social activities took place at Arlington Cemetery which was secluded and very quiet. Dr. Gueli was a vivacious speaker with tremendous knowledge of those days; and she gave a very entertaining overview of that period
which changed womens lives forever.
With our Club’s election votes counted, Carol Skladany reported that Margaret Field had been elected as President of the Club for 2017. Chaplain Pauline Pivowar gave the benediction; and we adjourned at 11:55am.
Respectfully submitted, Joyce Weir
