The Laurel Senior Friendship Club met on October 12, 2016 at the Laurel- Beltsville Senior Activity Center. Vice President Tom Dernoga opened the meeting at 10:30; and Chaplain Dominic Giachino offered a prayer. We followed with the Pledge of Allegiance;
and our Choir gave us “Columbia the Gem of the Ocean”, “Zippidy Doo Dah”, and “Shine on Harvest Moon”.
Tom welcomed a new member and acknowledged Ann and Mike Mecanko who were our greeters costumed as an Amish couple. We had some other great costumes too. He
reminded us of the Craft Show on Saturday and stated that at next month’s meeting veterans will get a free lunch.
Gail Johnson, our Treasurer provided a report on our finances. She announced there
are some events we may lose next year for want of volunteers. We will lose our Travel Committee if we don’t find volunteers. She encouraged us to think about what we could
do to help the Club.
Carol Skladany reported that the Nominating Committee is proposing the following slate of officers for next year: President, Margaret Field and Jim Gordon; 1st Vice President,
Tom Dernoga; 2nd Vice President Dominic Giachino; 3rd Vice President, Barbara Dorney; Treasurer, Gail Johnson; Assistant Treasurer, Barbara Brent; Secretary, Joyce Weir; and Assistant Secretary, Jeane Kidwell. Each of these individuals introduced themselves to the audience. All of them have had experience doing other jobs in the Club. The election will be held next month.
Our current Travel Chair, Wanda Bell, reported last month’s trip was very successful. The last trip of the year will be the Baltimore Symphony on December 17.
Esther’s Treasures brought in $77. The 50/50 raffle resulted in $52 for the Treasury and $26 each for Phyllis Ross and Marjorie Wood. Barbara Brent conducted a raffle which gave a $25 gift card to four winners.
Dominic Giachino reported that Mike Boivin has made out the schedule for next year’s computer classes. Sign-up sheets are in the Office.
Margaret Field reminded everyone that the New Member Orientation is next Wednesday and November 9th will be our next meeting.
Jack Wittmann, our Entertainment Chair, introduced the Seasoned Players which included our own Lin & Helen Spencer and Jo Ann Wittmann at the piano. We had some powerful solos and dance routines. The flapper era fringed dresses on the ladies were
the cats meow.
Dominic Giachino gave the benediction; and we adjourned at 12 noon.
